Aims

 

The revised syllabus aims to further develop:-

 

  • Continuity in MM hours
  • Opportunity for speaking practice
  • More scope for the development of personal interests in the portfolios and less scope for plagiarism
  • The efficient and selective use of the Headway course and of student presentations leaving more time for the first 3 aims

 

B.        TPO HOUR (formerly known as ‘comp’)

 

 

Speaking activities + Student led activities. (2LEA style)

 

·        Variety of activities taken from sources such as activities from Julie’s pack current syllabi etc.  Students choose every week.

 

·        One 15 minute student led activity per week (according to the number of students – group of two students present for 10-15 minutes- weeks 4-12?) 

 

Activity options

 

 

  1. Presentation and activity linked to book option on the portfolio. 
  2. Game/activity of the same style as teacher presents.
  3. Mini listening comprehension lesson (2LCE style with transcript, questions, and answer key). 

 

Portfolio

 

  • Obligatory reading option – choice of books from whole list, no compulsory Wilde, Drabble etc;
  • Different in each of the two semesters (see attached sheet)

 

 

C.    LAB HOUR

 

  • Alternates between the multimedia lab and audio lab

 

Multimedia Lab

 

  • 6 hrs per semester
  • TV series – Frasier, Fawlty Towers, other suggestions?
  • One 25 minute episode per week – students watch episode, then transcript a 2-3 minute scene using the F5 tool.
  • 10-15 minutes each hour if time for setting up emails, extra Headway practice, extra comp practice or work on presentations, such as finding audio extracts (how did this work in 3LEA/2LCE?  Did the students get access to computers with recording equipment at the fac?)
  • Lecteurs will be provided with VHS copy of episode to be watched on the computers, clips will be already digitized onto Logo lab

 

Audio Lab

 

  • 6 hrs pr semester
  • 5 listening comps (NPR, BBC, CBC, ANBC etc)
  • 1 practice exam per semester
  • Comps last approx. 40 mins or so with pre list. and if time post list. activity
  • Start of every lab hour there is 10/12 minutes of headway, consisting of two exercises (see attached sheet) that Shona has chosen from each unit in order to compliment the main pronunciation problems encountered by students
  • Teachers will be provided with a tape of ‘headway relooké’ as well as a comp tape

LISTENING/SPEAKING PORTFOLIO

GOALS: Listen and speak English

            Reflect on own proficiency and learning

            Provide basis for evaluation and oral exam

 

FORMAT: Collected reports on listening/speaking experiences, 1-2 typed pages per activity, informative TOC.

 

CAVEATS:

Ø      You must complete the Reading Assignment and four more options.

Ø      Your write-up should be brief (it provides a record of activity and to provide proof of work)

Ø      You may not recycle work across semesters or years

Ø      You should hand in monthly segments of portfolios for feedback

Ø      Credit will be given for the content of the audio/oral activity rather than written English

Ø      You must type your portfolio: hand-written portfolios will not be accepted

Ø      You must use the exact template portfolio sent to you via e-mail

Ø      You must make two copies of your portfolio

Ø      You must bring your portfolio with you to the oral exam in June

Ø      You must hand in your portfolio to your teacher in week 10 of the semester

Ø      You may NOT include any pictures in your portfolio

 

Remember, your portfolio is a record of your work.  Do not include any work that is copied from another source.  Plagiarism may lead to an automatic failure.

 

READING ASSIGNMENT (OBLIGATORY) (Both Semesters)

Read the following two of the books on the list provided in English. You may present on one of the books in class.  If you do present on one of the books in class, write a presentation outline and include this in your portfolio.  If you do not present on the books in class, research and compile the story/history/background of the author. 

 

1-INTERVIEW OPTION (semester 1)

Conduct an interview in English with a native speaker a)Prepare your questions in advance and take detailed notes during the interview.

b)Write a transcript or give a detailed account of the answers to your questions.

 

 

 

c)Give your personal reaction to your interviewee’s comments, and to the assignment as a language learning exercise.

 

2-SELF-SPEAKING OPTION (both semesters)

a)    Record yourself talking in English (subject material may be based on radiodiaries/soundportraits)

b)    Transcribe your oral work

c)     Write an analysis of your pronunciation, grammar and fluency

*You may use home equipment, the multimedia lab or “lecteurs” microphones.

 

3-AUDIO-VISUAL LISTENING OPTION (both semesters but different each semester)

 

i-FILM (Semester 1)

a)    Watch a film in English at the cinema

b)    Find a review about the film (press/internet)

c)     Write about whether you agree or disagree with the review

 

ii-VIDEO/DVD (Semester 2)

a)    Watch a video or DVD in English

b)    Transcribe in English the dialogue of a short scene

c)     Choose 5 words or expressions used in the scene.  Define them and then explain their importance in the film.

 

iii-MUSIC (either semester but not twice)

 

a)    Choose one singer and three of their songs

b)    Analyse the rhyme scheme and transcribe the rhyming vowels in one verse of each of the three songs.

c)     Compare the three songs and comment on the difference between words which are sung and spoken

 

4-TEACHING ENGLISH OPTION (Semester 2)

a)    Interview an English teacher about their choice of career, their experiences, their training, pedagogical views

b)     Prepare your questions in advance and take notes during the interview

c)     Write a transcript or a detailed account of the interview

 

 

 

5-ENGLISH SOCIETY OPTION (one option obligatory in both semesters)

i-LECTURE SERIES Attend a lecture

a)    Ask a question at the end of the lecture

b)    Write a summary of the lecture and your question

ii-SOCIAL EVENT Attend a social event with the English Society

a)    Write up the event

b)    Give your opinion as a language learning exercise

iii-DRAMA CLUB

Attend one drama club meeting

a)    Write up the meeting

b)    Give your opinion as a language learning exercise

 

6-AUDIO LIBRARY OPTION

i-BS ANGLAIS (semester 1 or 2 but not twice)

a)    Find a cassette in the Audio library in the BS Anglais

b)    Listen and understand the recording

c)     Evaluate whether the tape is useful for other students learning English

 

ii-THE INTERNET (semester 1 or 2 but not twice)

Go to one of the following websites and do one of the exercises within that site, following the on-screen instructions:

a)    Select two of the units about London.

b)    Listen and complete all the exercises, checking your answers

c)     In your portfolio, summarise the extract, and list 10 words/expressions/grammar points that you learnt.

a)    Keep a journal for your listening speaking activities over the semester: include your participation in your English classes and extra curricular listening/speaking

b)    At the end of the semester write a self-evaluation of your progress
