Option
3: Movie Critic
Welcome
back to the Multimedia Lab! In today's class, you
will watch a film trailer and listen to a critic's review of a modern
film.
One goal of this class is to give you an opportunity to see where you might find listening options for audio film reviews on the internet. But another aim is for you to listen to/speak in English about various components of films, plotlines, and critical reviews with your classmates and your lecteur. If you are interested in completing Option #3 for your Listening Portfolio, today is might be a day to get some ideas!
Step
1: CHOOSE
A
FILM! To
begin, skim through the 9 different links to films listed below
and choose one that might be interesting to you. These links are
from
different sites.
Step
2:
WATCH
AND LISTEN
to your
selected movie's trailer and audio review(s) a few times. Read
STEP 3 so
you know what to be thinking about while you are listening.
Step
3:
CHOOSE
ONE
ACTIVITY from the 5 choices below:
1. Invent-your-own-ending! With a partner, or by yourself, create what you imagine could be an ending for your film. Be prepared to get up and act it out or read it/give a dramatic reading to the class. Your "performance" should last 2 minutes.
2.
Public
Relations Agent: Convince the class
that this film is the greatest film
ever! You are the Media
Representative for the film company that produced this film and you are
trying
to convince the class to buy the film to show in their theaters. What makes this film special or
unique? What should everyone know
about it?
3.
Record
your Own Review: Using the Creative
Wave program on the computers in this
lab, make a recording of your own impressions about this film after
watching
the trailer and listening to the audio review. What
looks interesting? What did you hear that
you have questions about, or an
opinion about? Listen to your recording and ask your lecteur to listen
too. There
are tips for using Creative Wave on the 3LCE site.
4.
Word
Study: If
your trailer includes actual dialogue from the film (not just an
over-narrative
for promotion) analyze the language that you hear in the trailer. What
accents
do you hear? What register
language do the various characters use?
What vocab can you cite to illustrate that?
Be prepared to present your findings to the class.
5.
Siskel
and Ebert:
These two guys were famous movie reviewers in the US that had a
weekly
show. Now you get to be them.
With a partner, prepare a 2 minute
sketch where you give your "review" for the class. You
can have opposing views. Use the audio
review for your film to give you ideas about
what to say.
Step
4:
Perform!
Or record! Or promote! Or
present!
