Looking
for Ideas for Organizing an English Society Event ?
Interested
in doing Option #5 for your Portfolio?
How about:
Run a Pub Night at
O'Neill's!
Every other Wednesday night is
English Society Pub
Night at O'Neill's Irish Pub in Vieux Nice on Rue Droite.
You can be in charge of one of these
evenings – this means that you could: publicize it with some posters,
flyers, or something posted on our website (you create a
picture/document, and
David will put it up on the site).
Then, you create some kind of game, quiz, or activity to take
place
during the Pub Night. It can be
anything you want, as long as it involves getting everyone speaking in
English! Perhaps it will be a theme night
– you choose. Whatever you
decide, you organize it, you announce it, you run the show! You decide how it will work, if you are
going to give any prizes, or if it is even a competition?
You could also do this with a partner
from any of the other 3LCE groups if you like.
Whitney Webb and Ger O'Callaghan are the coordinators
for these events and are who you would work with to make this happen. The lecteurs will help you out during
the event if you need it, but essentially, you are in charge!!
Find a Native
Speaker to present a speech for
the Lecture Series!
Know someone who speaks
English as their native
language that would be a good speaker?
GREAT! Get them to agree to
give one of the lectures for our Wednesday at 1:00 Lecture Series. This means that you are the liaison
between the speaker and David; who is in charge of the Lecture Series. You are responsible for helping this person
with any details; and coordinating with David any audio/visual aides
they might
need for their speech. You will be
responsible for publicizing the lecture, with posters, flyers, or
something
posted on our website (you create a picture/document, and David will
put it up
on the site). You will also
introduce your speaker at the beginning of the lecture.
Run a Movie Night
at O'Neill's
Every other Wednesday night is
the English Society
Movie Night at O'Neill's Pub in Vieux Nice on Rue Droite.
You can be in charge of one of these
evenings – this means that you could: publicize it with some posters,
flyers, or something posted on our website (you create a
picture/document, and
David will put it up on the site).
You will find a DVD of a film which is originally in English - the DVD must be able to be shown in
VO with French subtitles. The film
shouldn't be longer than 90 minutes.
You will think of a fun low stress speaking activity/game/quiz for people to participate in after the
film, in pairs or teams, and then you can introduce/distribute this
activity. You run the show from
start to finish. Whitney Webb and
Ger O'Callaghan are the coordinators for these events and are who you
would
work with to make this happen. You
could also do this with a partner from any of the other 3LCE groups if
you
like. The lecteurs will help you
out during the event if you need it, but essentially, you are in
charge!!
Director for a Day!!
Even if you are not part of
the Drama Club, you can
fulfill Portfolio Option 5 by working with the Drama Club for just one
day! How? You
will come up with some improvisation
activities for the Drama Club members to participate in, and then
execute them
(the activities, not the students!)
This means that for at least 30 minutes of Drama
Club one Friday afternoon, you'll run the show. You
don't have to be a regular member
of the Club to do this option! You
could think of activities on your own, or go on the Internet to get
some ideas.
The idea is to come up with 2 or 3 different short improv activities
that the
members of the Drama Club can do which focus on them acting/speaking in
English. Michael Creek; who is in
charge of the Drama Club, will be your contact for this, but
essentially, you
are in charge!!
Conversation
Exchange Coordinator
Know some native speakers? For this variation, we want you to find a
native English
speaker who wants a conversation partner to improve their French. Your task is to help them find a French
student who is looking to improve their English thru a free
conversation
exchange. Julie Alexander,
who is in charge of Conversation Exchange, will be your contact for
this to put
you in touch with some French students looking for an English partner. You will coordinate the two people
meeting each other, and be the liaison for their first meeting.
Individual English
Society Event
Have a great idea for a
one-time English Society
Event? Want to lead other students
thru something you know about from an anglophone culture (pumpkin
carving, for
example)? Want to stage a poetry
reading in English? Want to show a
film one day at the Fac? Want to organize
a debate about a certain topic?
Want to organize the Christmas sing-a-long/Christmas quiz before
the
holiday break in December? GREAT!! Come up with the idea, present it to
your lecteur, and if they approve, make it happen!
You publicize it, you arrange what you need, you run the
show! You are in charge!
You could also do this with a partner
from any of the other 3LCE groups if you like.
