Students

Students in the English Department at the University of Nice come in a number of flavours;
here is a rough guide.  Choose type of major or type of enrollment.

Type of enrolment

Regular students
Regular students (étudiants assidus) attend all classes and submit to all forms of evaluation - written and oral exams, class grades (contrôle continu).

Off-campus students
Off-campus students (étudiants non-assidus), who are in employment or have family responsibilities, are not obliged to attend classes.  They may attend class at the teacher’s discretion.  These students do not receive a class grade and take only final written and oral exams.  These final exams may, however, carry requirements such as the portfolio for first and second year English majors (LCE), which off-campus students must prepare.

Option students
First year students enrolled in other majors at the University of Nice (e.g., sociology, German) may also take one semester of first year English classes as an option (découverte), which will allow them to switch majors if they so desire.  These students are subject to the same evaluation requirements as regular students.

Erasmus students
Students with a primary enrolment in a university in another European university can take classes at the University of Nice as part of a study period abroad.  These students are subject to the same requirements as regular students, but may require different paperwork at the end of the semester.

Two further factors confuse this picture:

1. Students taking an English option (découverte) can enroll as off-campus students (non-assidus), and thus may not attend class, taking only final exams.

2. English majors (LCE) can take an option in Business with languages (LEA) and vice-versa.

3. Factors 1 and 2 can be combined . . .

Repeating students (redoublants)

Students whose average for the year is below 50% (10 points out of 20) retake the courses, or parts of courses, where they have a failing grade (under 10 out of 20).  Some students may take classes at two different levels (e.g., second and third year) at the same time.
