Tools

Here are a few places you may need to go.   The tools are free to download and use unless otherwise stated.  There's a calendar for the current semester with holidays at the bottom.

Internet service providers
If  you're planning on getting internet at home, you can do worse than these addresses; you'll probably need a France Telecom line to set up your subscription.

Writing web pages

Mozilla is part of the Netscape family, offering alternatives to Microsoft for browsing etc.  The Mozilla composer, located on the bottom left of the browser window is our tool for creating web pages.  Mozilla 1.6 should meet your needs.

File transfer protocol

To copy, edit, and replace existing web pages, you may need WS-FTP LE 95, a free programme available to the education community.

Personal computing

If you don't already own one, I suggest investing in an intelligent stick to allow you to transfer information from computer to computer.

(There are eight of you sharing your office computer, you may need to use the one in 304, and no doubt you will want to use the BS and other university computers, unless you have your own.  If you are wondering whether to bring your own computer over, bring it!)

This device stores 128 or 256 MB, works off a USB port (the same one you run your digital camera on), reads and writes more quickly than your hard-drive, and is both smaller and more reliable than a disquette.  You should get one for under €40.

More details available at these sites, picked more at less at random from Google, so no guarantees on prices.
