WRITTEN BY THE STUDENTS OF FOURTH YEAR LEA EDITED BY THOMAS STILL AND GRAINNE FOLEY Deborah, Marion, Catherine and Amelle As students of the English Department we also try to improve our English by listening to native speaker's music and recently some of our favourite groups gave concerts in Nice and we went to see them. So on the 12TH of November we went to Ben Harper and his band « The Innocent criminals ». After a long hour and an half wait outside « Salle Nikaia » and another long wait inside he finally appeared on stage and started to sing. We immediately forgot the annoyance we felt at having to wait for so long and felt transported to another world. His world is atypical and you have to enter it entirely in order to feel the whole emotion he transmits though his guitar playing ( pure genius) and his bewitching voice. This atmosphere together with the heat and thirst eventually made one of us faint (didn’t it Amelle?) In brief… a night full of unforgettable emotions! On the 16th of November we also went to see the English band from Devon called “ Muse”, whose concert could be best summed up as a “fantastic experience of music and colours”. Every song played was associated with a colour, given by the many lights on stage. Apart from the great musical ability of the singer (and excellent piano and guitar player) nobody who was there that night could deny the sensation of being in a magical, mystical world, as if they were being guided by Muse on a sort of Milky Way cast by their songs. Inspired by the enthusiasm of these two concerts we felt like asking one of the lecteurs of the University her opinion about the two artists and music in general, so we asked Jenny, a 28-year-old lectrice from Sweden, first what kind of music she listens to. Jenny:" I am listening to a mix of a lot of music, on radio for instance. Things that are at the top of the charts, I am listening to French but also to English radio via the Internet, but if I did have a favourite band it would be U2. Marion:" Have you already been to a concert or a festival in Nice?" Jenny:" Yes but I have only been to free concerts like this one on the place Massena for Carnival or for "la fete de la musique". Marion:" Ben Harper and Muse just did a concert in Nice, do you know them?" Jenny:" I know Ben Harper and I like his music, but I don't know Muse" Marion:" Both are famous in France, is there any famous French music in Sweden?" Jenny:" Celine Dion but actually she sings in English! Manu Chao and Mylene Farmer are also well known and Alizée but only the song" Lolita". Furthermore in Sweden we have the French radio " Energy". Thanks for your participation Jenny. That’s all for this edition, see you next time.
