The « Villa Juturne »

Deborah, Marion, Catherine and Amelle

The « Villa Juturne » is located in Beausoleil 22, Avenue du Général de-Gaulle (above Monaco); Patrizio Rogolini who was the architect and the painter built it between 1913 and 1916.  This building is wholly decorated with fresco outside and inside.  The Rogolinis, of Lombard origin, have been an artist family for three generations.  Patrizio Rogolini worked as painter in the several baroque churches of the French Riviera, he also went in the south of Argentina, in Punta dell’ Este, in order to decorate the palace of the governor, he painted the ceiling of the Opera Garnier in Paris which then was repainted by Marc Chagall. He taught drawing in the University of Urbino in Italy.

To decorate his own house, Patrizio Rogolini was inspired by different schools: reproductions of Botticelli and Mantegna works and baroque “putti” associated with the female faces of the 1930s which make the paintings anachronistic.

The façade is adorned with friezes that represent female faces, flowers and Renaissance scenes. Inside, mythological scenes evoke the legend of Icare and Juturne,  his two children. The stairwell is embellished with flowers that are different according to the stairs and upstairs a rose garden is represented.

And he also decorated his own flat; in his bedroom he reproduced The Christ of Mantegna, The Spring and The birth of Venus of Botticelli.

In the bathroom, several naiads are represented taking a bath in waterfalls.
The ceiling of the living room evokes the four seasons (for example Autumn is represented by Backus doing grape harvest with beautiful women). This ceiling painting also underlines the different arts and sciences like painting with one “putti” painting another one, drawing with a “putti” drawing, sculpture with a “putti” sculpting, music with a female playing violin and astronomy with a “putti” staring at the sky with a telescope.

Of course, if you want to see all of these beauties, you have the possibility to visit the “Villa Juturne” during the “journées du patrimoine” in Beausoleil.
