Oral English classes for first year LEA students  include listening comprehension and speaking classes.

Students also study English grammar and translation for a total of  5 hours of English per week.  They have five hours of another language (typically Spanish, Portuguese, or German) but the main focus of their degree is business, including core courses in economics, law, and management.

Oral English programme

First year students have two hours of oral English per week, both with the lecteurs.
  • Comprehension: one hour listening comprehension with the lecteurs
  • TPO: one hour of speaking with the lecteurs

Class activities

COMP     Comprehension classes take place in ordinary classrooms.  Students work on listening exercises using worksheets with prelistening, listening, andpostlistening exercises; teachers have  answer sheets and transcripts.

TPO           Speaking classes take place in an ordinary classroom.  Speaking activities are organised in pairs and groups to encourage participation, and students give presentations which are important for their continuous assessment grade.

Timetable and teachers

All groups meet on Monday or Friday and each lecteur has the same group for COMP and TPO.

Evaluation

Listening: Comprehension exam composed by coordinator with help from teachers.

Speaking: Continuous assessment mark based on proficiency and participation.

To do

This class will be coordinated by Larissa.  Last year's coordinator was Julie, so check with her for questions of detail.

1. Print and copy last year's materials from the archives in Shared Documents on the computer in 102.  Use these as a guide for preparing this year's classes.

2. COMP
a) Materials. Find new materials for this semester.  Your criteria include:
  • variety of accents, topics, formats (interview, monologue, etc.)
  • different internet sources (not all NPR; see our links)
  • interest (but nothing too disturbing/depressing/offensive/trivial/topical)
  • comprehensibility: these are fairly low-level learners, so go for slow, clear delivery and simple language where possible (aim for easier than last year if you can)
  • availability of similar pieces for exams - you will need 6-8 exam exercises for this semester.  These can be later portions of a longer piece, other episodes of a series, or related in other ways.  It's best to select them at the start.
  • number of lessons: one per week, leaving one or two slots open for practice exams.
b) Preparation. Record your selections, then distribute to 1LEA teachers for preparation.  You will need a transcript, student worksheet, and answer sheet/lesson plan for each piece.  Divide up the work so that all your teachers are involved.

c) Administration. Print up your student pack and teacher pack for Shona to check.  Get photocopies made.  Make your master CD and tapes for your teachers.  Add your syllabus to the Oral English website.

d) Coordination. Plan and conduct an introductory meeting with your teachers and Shona to make sure everyone understands the class goals, format, syllabus, materials, and evaluation procedures.

e) Evaluation. Record exam pieces and organise the transcription and writing of exercises with your teachers.

TPO
Expand upon last year's syllabus, remembering that last year's classes met only once every two weeks for TPO, compared to this year's weekly sessions.
