3LCE

Oral English classes for third year English specialists figure in a new teaching unit (UE, for unité d'enseignement) in a revised English curriculum which starts this year.

As in the first two years of the LCE programme, students have other classes in literature, civilisation, linguistics and translation.   Some of these classes are options (e.g., history of art, cinema, early English, or professional translation).

Here's an outline of the new programme, now with the snappy title: Etudes anglophones, semestre 5.

Oral English programme

Third year students have two hours of oral English per week:
  • Intonation: one hour class on English intonation with Riitta Blum
  • TPO: one hour of speaking with the lecteurs
Lecteurs also teach a second hour with third year students, composed of three or four 15-20 minute individual tutoring sessions, where they meet with each student in their TPO perhaps two or three times per semester to work on individual pronunciation and speaking problems.
  • 1-on-1: individual tutoring sessions with lecteurs.

Class activities

TPO           Speaking classes take place in an ordinary classroom.  Speaking activities are organised in pairs and groups to encourage participation, and a short period is set aside each week for student-led activities.  Students also complete a listening/speaking portfolio of activities completed outside class time which forms the basis of the end-of-semester oral exam.

Timetable and teachers

All groups meet on Thursday afternoon for TPO and 1-on-1 and each lecteur has the same group for both classes.

There are only four lecteurs for this class; two have two classes each.

Evaluation

Continuous assessment mark based on proficiency, participation and portfolio.

Oral exam at the end of semester with permanent teachers and lecteurs based on portfolio.

To do

This class will be coordinated by Julie.

1. Design new syllabus to incorporate group activities (TPO), evaluation and feedback sessions (1-on-1), and portfolio work.
  • what will happen in each session?
  • how will the portfolio be handled (presentations in 1-on-1? immediate feedback?)
  • how will evaluation work?
  • how can we make both TPO and portfolio different from 2LCE?
2. Revise classroom TPO activities to accommodate new format.  Activities should be pair- and group-based, alternating prepared and improvised tasks, and excluding presentations.

3. Revise portfolio requirements with Shona.
