This section describes the oral language training for second year students in business and applied languages at the University of Nice.

Students enrolled in business and applied languages (langues étrangères appliquées, LEA) take classes in economics, law, and management in the form of core courses taught in French.  In addition, they study two foreign languages, generally English and German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish.

English LEA courses include English/French translation and oral English, plus various classes in English grammar, civilisation (socio-political history of English-speaking countries), and the language of business, depending on students’ year of study.
   
Students are generally preparing for professions which use English as a means of communication, including international commerce and tourism.  Different types of student enrolment are described here.


Course organisation

2LEA students have five hours of English per week over the academic year: one hour of civilisation; two hours of translation, and one hour each of listening comprehension and speaking practice.

The following description concerns only the oral English classes: listening and speaking.   Classes meet during each of two semesters (September to January, and February to May), with final exams in January and June, and resits, again for each of the two semesters (sessions de rattrapage), in September.


Practical class activities

Listening and speaking classes are given over to language practice: the goal is to help students make progress in their ability to understand and produce the oral language.

Listening (compréhension)
Students follow a listening programme defined at the beginning of the semester, which consists of one listening topic per week, with listening exercises to be completed in class and reviewed afterwards in the audio library or via this website.  The 2LEA listening programme for the current semester can be viewed from here.

Speaking (TPO)
These classes focus on students’ ability to communicate in English, particularly as regards fluency, but also with respect to grammar/vocabulary and pronunciation.

Class activities include short student presentations, group activities, projects, and discussion.   Presentations are always brief (10-15 minutes) with an interactive follow-up activity.  Projects are conducted in groups, and involve outside research which is presented to the class and then written up.

Evaluation

Listening: written listening exam based on audio recordings.
Speaking: class grade based on class presentations, projects, and participation.
